“Rays” is a poem about reflection.

In my youth, I was a very different person.  This can be seen in my book “Lurid Lyrics” by comparing the poems to one another.  Though they are largely mixed together, it is not difficult to form some semblance of a timeline.

In fact, I was a somewhat cruel child.  The way I was raised and my early experiences affected me more strongly than they do now that time has distanced me from that life.  I met new people, learned more about the world, and grew.

Now that a form of “Future Me” has become “Present Me,” I can look back on “Past Me” and see her for who she was and how she became me.  Without her, I would not exist.  I am a collection of experiences, people, and ideals that have shaped me and will continue to shape me forever.
